A day in Chinatown  - New York City




I had a great time in New York City this past Saturday. It is incredible how much I love that city and how it reminds me of my hometown, Sao Paulo. The excitement and craziness of Manhattan brings back memories of the when I used to live in Sao Paulo. Although I really like living here in Boston, every once in a while I enjoy the feel of the excitement the I find in the Big Apple. It recharges my body energy and I think I need that every once in a while. It amazes me that every time I go to that city, I see it from a different angle or perspective. Each part of NYC is a world inside of a city. When I was there, I had a chance to learn a little more about Chinatown. On the down side it is a part of Manhattan that sells lots of counterfeit goods. On the other hand it is a place where one can find good food, a good atmosphere and interesting people. It is a place where people came to work, live and change their lives. It has a special cultural place in a fantastic city. While I was there I got discouraged when I saw so many ads, street signs, and store signs that were written in Chinese. Luckily, it only took a short time to immerse myself into that world. I believe a visit to Chinatown is an opportunity understand how big the world is and how important China is in this world. I think everybody should get the chance to walk through these streets and get to know a bit more about this "country" inside the island of Manhattan.

Restaurant - The Elephant Walk - Cambridge



Cambridge é uma cidade com muitos tesouros escondidos. Já passamos várias vezes em frente a um restaurante chamado The Elephant Walk, mas nunca paramos para ver qual era do lugar. E o restaurante está no mesmo lugar há quase 20 anos! Mas neste último final de semana decidimos conhecer o lugar. Posso dizer que que foi a melhor decisão! O menu do restaurante é uma mistura de cozinhas francesa e do Cambodja. Pratos saborosos e deliciosos que valem a pena testar! Eu recomendo! Além de Cambridge, o restaurante tem dois filiais em Boston e Waltham.

Cambridge is a city with many hidden treasures. We have walk by the restaurant The Elephant Walk many times but never stopped by. The restaurant has been in the same place for almost 20 years! This weekend we decided to give it a try. The best decision ever!! The restaurant menu is a mix of Cambodian and French cuisines. Tasteful and delicious dishes to test out! I recommend it! In addition to Cambridge, the restaurant has two other locations in Boston and Waltham.

Dica legal! Faz tempo que eu não dou uma diquinha de viagem aqui no blog não é!? A dica hoje e sobre telefone celular pré-pago. Travel - New Orleans - USA






I am so sorry for the delay in writing the blog. But, it was for a good cause: I was traveling to New Orleans. NOLA, as the city is called by its population, was one of the USA cities I had a dream to visit one day. The visit was worth every minute.


Everybody knows that the city was partially destroyed by the Hurricane Katrina that isolated the city back in 2005. Going there to learn a bit more about this terrible event that almost destroyed the city. I had a chance to visit some of the most destroyed areas, visit some construction areas of the new levees around the city. I also learned that not by chance the historical area of the city was not destroyed as much as, for example, the area called Lower Ninth Ward. This area is one of the lowest areas in NOLA and faces a canal was almost totally destroyed the invasion of the water that broke the 17th Street Canal levee. But through all of this tragedy, I heard that the population is getting back to normal, except in the most affected areas where many people for many causes could not back yet to their homes.


New Orleans is a wonderful, historically unique city that really reminds me my country Brazil. The city was first colonized by the Spanish and later by the French as Louisiana state. Only in 1803 the land was sold to the US by Napoleon. Then you can imagine how much history there is in this city.


In addition to all this history, the city is well known for its entertainment. There is every year Mardi Gras when the citizens celebrate Carnival – it almost the same as in Brazil. There is also a very unique nightlife. Bourbon Street is the most famous street for nightlife in New Orleans. There are at least 8 squares with bars, discos, and all the stuff that people of all ages are looking for to have fun. The party starts when the sun rises and doesn’t finish until the night turns day again.

Metro - Ao usar as máquinas de venda automática de bilhetes do metro, não se esqueça de se certificar em qual estação voce irá sair. A cidade é dividida em zonas e os preços dos bilhetes variam conforme a zona onde fica a sua estação. Entao certifique-se que voce está comprando o bilhete com o valor correto. Se você está planejando ficar por mais de um dia, você pode comprar o smart card (um cartão que voce pode usar várias vezes). Eles podem valor de um dia a uma semana. E o mais importante: não jogue fora o seu bilhete, voce irá precisar dele para sair da sua estação de destino.
Taxi - Se você decidir tomar um táxi e tem várias malas, fique sabendo o taxista irá lhe cobrar US$ 0,50 por cada mala que ele carregar e mais US$ 2,00 por mala colocada no bagageiro. E cada passageiro adicional no táxi irá lhe custar um adicional de US$ 1,50.
Se você pegar um táxi do aeroporto certifique-se onde fica localizado seu hotel. Cada estado (Maryland, Virginia e DC) tem sua própria linha de táxi. Um táxi com uma placa de Virginia não irá levá-lo para Maryland, assim não sinta-se frustrado se alguém que está atrás de você na fila do táxi pegue o táxi na sua frente!

Tourist Tips
When using the metro fare vending machines; be sure you know where you are going to get off. The city is divided into zones and ticket prices vary. Buy a ticket to your destination. If you are planning to stay for more than a day, you can buy a smart card. These are good for a day or a week. Don’t throw away your tickets as you will need it at the next station.
If you decide to take a taxi and has lots of bags, be advised that the taxi drivers charge 0.50 for each bag they handle and each bag placed in the truck cost US$ 2.00. Also each additional passenger costs 1.50.
If you take a taxi from the airport make sure you know where your hotel or accommodation is located. Each stated (Maryland, Virginia and D.C.) has its own taxi line. A cab with a Virginia plate doesn’t take you to Maryland, so don’t get frustrated if someone that is behind you in the taxi line takes the cab in front of you!
