Charity - Arte Que Salva - 2015

March 22, 2015

Arte Que Salva is a project which helps children who live in disadvantage and poverty. It was founded by Brazilian missionary Eve Picardi who has organized mission trips to Brazil and several other countries. She made a visit to Haiti shortly after the 2010 earthquake that did extensive damage to the country. Ms. Picardi saw the misery of the people whose homes and dreams were suddenly destroyed. Her vision was to help the displaced children recover from their trauma by providing them with art supplies. Many of the children had never seen art brushes and paints.

The endeavor in Haiti was a success and thus began the Arte Que Salva project. Organized by Eve Picardi and Miami artist Carmem Gusmao, the project is now in its 3rd year and for the first time will have an auction which features art that was made by underprivileged children who live in Sanford, Florida and Rio de Janeiro’s infamous landfield (Lixao de Gramacho). The children drew pictures of their dreams which were then sent to professional artists. Those artists completed the children’s work to create paintings that will be offered in the auction. Among the 48 Brazilian artists who volunteered their time is Margarette Mattos of Cambridge-MA. All the profits from the auction will go directly to support the Central Florida Dream Education Center and the Life Change Project in Rio de Janeiro. These programs provide educational and mentoring services for children.

The auction Arte Que Salva – USA 2015 will take place in Miami, Florida on March 26.

Charity - Donate a Prom Dress

February 9, 2015

Doe um vestido de formatura

Hi everyone!
As you know spring is approaching and it is time for prom bashes. Teenagers around the country are looking forward the big event. Girls especially are looking for their perfect dress. However, it is not every girl who is able to afford to buy her dream prom dress. Fortunately, there are some charities around the country that try to help those girls.

This year Style My Bridal which is an online bridal store became a collection partner for Belle of the Ball, a Boston-based charity that collects and distributes dresses to high school juniors and seniors who otherwise could not afford to attend their prom. Anton's Cleaners donates all of the dry cleaning and other partners supply shoes and jewelry. Approved recipients attend a Boutique Day hosted at Simmons College. They select a dress and volunteer seamstresses make alterations if necessary. In 2014 there were 400 girls who attended and selected from among 2,000 dresses.

We have collection spots set up in 3 places in MA and 2 spots in NYC. They're listed here. If you are interested in collecting dresses from family and friends in another area, let us know and we can work something out.
Also, if you know anyone who needs a dress, there are directions on the Belle of the Ball site to apply for one!

Dresses:
  • Should be something a high schooler can wear to the prom (trendy, stylish)
  • Can be any color, any style and any size!
  • Don't need to be dry cleaned - Anton's Cleaners will do that

Fashion - It is spring in the Southern Hemisphere

December 11, 2014

Here in the Northern Hemisphere we are experiencing some cold temperatures. Now my readers in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly in Brazil, are enjoying warm spring weather.
My favorite season is spring. The days are longer, the temperatures are warmer and our wardrobes are more colorful!
Last spring here in Boston I wore this beautiful one shoulder dress. It is a good option to wear to a cocktail party at the beach.
