Aqui nos EUA entre os meses de Maio e meados de Junho é época dos bailes de formatura de colegial, que aqui são chamado de prom. A palavra prom é a abreviação de promenade e consiste numa festa tipo black tie em que os estudantes do ensino médio fazem quando passam do ano junior para senior ou se graduam no nivel senior. Aqui nos EUA o ensino médio (high school) é dividido da seguinte maneira:
O prom para eles seria como para nós Brasileiros o baile de formatura de universidade, a diferença é que aqui o prom é a festa de formatura de colegial.Na minha época ainda se faziam bailes de formatura do colegial, mas hoje em dia confesso que não sei se ainda são comuns.
O que se veste para o baile
Os meninos geralmente vestem smoking preto ou branco, independentemente da hora do evento, às vezes combinados com gravatas coloridas.
As meninas usam vestidos tradicionais de festa na maioria das vezes longos. Existem vàrias lojas onde se podem encontrar os tradicionais vestidos de formatura, praticamente todas as lojas de departamentos como Macys, Lord & Taylor e Filenes, lojas online, boutiques fazem coleçoes todos os anos e oferecem uma variedade de vestidos de formatura para todos os gostos e bolsos.
O prom é um super evento onde todas as meninas ficam anciosas para o grande dia. Existe de tudo relacionado ao prom, desde a roupa
Tradicionalmente, as meninas também usam um bracelete de flores presenteado pelo rapaz que irá acompanhá-la a festa, que pode ser um amigo ou namorado. E em retribuição as meninas presenteam o rapaz que com uma flor de lapela combinando com seu bracelete.
In the United States and Canada, a prom, short for promenade, is a formal (black tie) dance, or gathering of high school students. It is typically held near the end of junior and/or senior year. It figures greatly in popular culture and is a major event among high school students. High school juniors attending the prom may call it Junior Prom while high school seniors may call it Senior Prom. In practice this may be a combined junior/senior dance.
In Brazil, bailes de formatura are usual at the end of high school and at college graduation. There is no crowning of a "king" or a "queen," but evening gowns and suits are required. Family may or may not be included, and there may be a live band or DJ hired to command the music.
Prom attire
Boys usually dress in black or white formal wear, regardless of the time of the event, sometimes paired with brightly colored ties or bow-ties with vests. Most are rented from stores that specialize in formal wear rentals.
Girls wear traditional ladies dresses or gowns. They may purchase their prom dresses from specialized shops as Macy's, Lord & Taylor, Filenes, boutiques, or internet retailers. There are many specialty labels selling prom dresses that release new collections each prom season.
Traditionally girls will also wear a corsage, given to them by their dates, and girls give boys matching boutonnières to be worn on their lapel.
